There’s only so much you can do when you are trapped in a cramped 100 square foot room with four little kids for 20 minutes or more.
Only so much to contain the youthful energy and exuberance that is a toddler, preschooler, and two grade schoolers before they go bonkers.
And there’s only so much patience you have as a mom to enforce strict no touching and no playing rules when there is literally nothing else to do but stare at the doctor’s office walls.
Taking four little people to various doctor’s appointment with me is not my idea of a good time, especially when the appointment is for me at the OBGYN.
But even for their routine well-child checkups or various sicknesses, lugging all four kids along is the reality of my stay-at-home homeschooling mom life, and it’s totally not fun.
Before we even make it to the exam room, my children climb up and down on the seats, stand on them to look out the window, watch TV, cry about something, and wander off down the hall (toddler).
Once in the exam room, we’re left with a “the doctor will be in shortly to see you” which has occasionally proven a loaded ball of baloney as the “shortly” turned into 30 minutes or more.
After a while my patience wears thin and I let my children freely sit on and spin each other on the doctor’s chair, climb onto the exam table and pretend to be doctors.
I let them wash their hands in the little sink in the corner and if I am in a very lenient mood, let them even lift up and down the exam table via foot petal (but I pretty much hate them doing that…).
I know I could “whip out my phone” but I hate doing that too. My children don’t need to be constantly entertained by a screen in order to be “behaved.”
Anyway, doctor’s office appointments when you are a homeschool mom without family nearby to watch your kids are the pits.
Which is why I am so glad that I can use an online urgent care like Amwell for my doctor appointment needs, saving me time and money and so much sanity.
