Do you remember that company called CleanFlicks? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t.
They were a company that took popular Hollywood films and edited out inappropriate content and then sold and rented them to the general public. However, a judge deemed that violated copyright laws and they were forced to shut down.
I happened to live in Provo, Utah as I was attending Brigham Young University, shortly after the ruling happened (CleanFlicks was based in Utah). I remember some local movie rental store was going out of business and selling (for cheap) all their copies of these edited films. My friends and I checked it out and I bought a few movies, all of which I hadn’t seen before (the pickings were slim since the better movies had already sold).
I threw all of them out years ago as they were pretty lousy movies, and I didn’t feel great having movies that broke copyright laws.
But, the idea of watching great movies without hearing or watching swearing, sex, nudity, disturbing images and bloody gore still appealed to me, and many others.
VidAngel – The New CleanFlicks but Legal
A friend recently told me about VidAngel. They are the new CleanFlicks (even based out of Utah again) except they are working within copyright laws.
VidAngel has tagged all potentially offensive parts of movies and lets you select, not them, what you don’t what in your movie viewing experience. You pay for and stream the movie to watch in the privacy of your own home in the way you choose, which right is protected by law. Vidangel just provides the filtering for you.
VidAngel contacted me and asked me to check them out so I did because I was super curious about how it all worked. They gave me some credits and I became an affiliate.
My husband and I have now watched several movies with VidAngel and we’re pretty hooked! It’s awesome that we don’t have to hear 114 crude words and phrases as we watch a movie, see naked body parts, and more.
And we get to watch a movie without all the garbage for $1! That to me is the very best part.
Even if you don’t want to filter anything, you can still use VidAngel to buy movies for just $1 a night! This is why it beats renting a movie from Redbox or Vudu and perhaps even Netflix.
With Redbox you have to gamble a bit with what is currently available at the box you visit, as it’s a physical copy. Even if you use promo codes, you still risk forgetting to return the movie, and there is the hidden costs of gas and time going to the box. And movie rentals are more than $1 a day now.
With Vudu, iTunes, Amazon, or Google Play you can stream the latest new releases from home, which is awesome, but it is dang expensive! We’re talking $2.99-$4.99 for a 1-day rental. I’m way too cheap to spend that much on a movie that I am watching at home. Isn’t that almost matinee price at a theater?
VidAngel is the best of Redbox’s low price with the convenience of at-home streaming services like Vudu. Plus, you can set up an automatic sell back of your digital copy after 24 hours so that you aren’t paying more than $1-2 a night. If you don’t, they send you like two reminder emails so you don’t forget to sell it back.
VidAngel has an awesome selection of hot new releases as well as old classics that are not available on Netflix, which is why it could also be a better route to go than Netflix, unless you love watching TV shows on Netflix, then it doesn’t really compete. VidAngel does have some TV shows available, but only 11 currently.
How does VidAngel Work?
Create an account on VidAngel either in your browser or through their app (still in Beta). Browse their movie selection, do a search, and find a movie you want to watch. (You can save movie candidates by adding them to your “Watch Later” list.)
You’ll select HD ($2) or SD ($1). You’ll buy the movie for $20.00. Then you’ll go through their very detailed filters and select what you want taken out. Then hit play!
Watch the movie on your phone, computer or tablet, or use your Chromecast (which we have and use to watch these movies) or AppleTV, AirPlay, or Roku. When the movie is done, you can go ahead and sell it back right away, or watch it again the next morning before selling it back. Or you can keep it for a few days or forever.
Every day you don’t sellback the movie costs you another dollar. You should also be able to set up an automatic sell-back after 24 hours. Otherwise they’ll email you a few times to remind you.
When you sell it back within 24 hours (for SD) you will have a $19 credit placed on your account. This means the next time you pick out a movie you will only have $1 deducted from your credit card, not $20, as the $19 credit will be applied toward the next movie. This video explains it:
*Note: If you want to watch two movies in one night, be sure to sell-back the first movie first, or you may find yourself with quite a few extra credits on your account the next day…
And that’s it! You’re watching videos for $1 or $2 a night with content you hopefully approve of.
Here’s why VidAngel may be awesome for you to try:
1. You love watching movies with your family, but don’t love awkward moments watching inappropriate content together, or having your children be exposed to foul language or graphic scenes unexpectedly.
2. You want your children to watch those awesome movies you loved as a kid from the 80’s and 90’s but without all the swearing and occasional nudity that they let pass in PG films.
3. You are terrible at remembering to return Redbox rentals.
4. You love watching movies.
5. You have always wanted to watch certain rated R films, but have always stayed away from them because of the inappropriate content or language in them. This can take out the reasons it was given an R-Rating so that you can still enjoy the touching film and story line guilt-free.
6. You want a better selection of digital movies than are found on Netflix.
7. You don’t love watching free movie rentals from the library because they are often scratched and you return them overdue.
8. You like knowing exactly what you will find in a movie. The filters on VidAngel give specific details on what is in a movie so you can better judge if it is worth your time, filters or not! Plus, VidAngel offers a “Inspiring” rating to help you decide.
My husband and I have watched Avengers: Age of Ultron (terrible – where’s the plot?), Austenland (funny!), The Grand Budapest Hotel (interesting), This Is Where I Leave You (didn’t really have a point and was pretty depressing), American Sniper (very inspiring), and Saving Private Ryan (my husband watched this by himself – he’s loved it for years though). The playback on Chromecast has vastly improved since we first started using their service. Sometimes the playback is a little weird when they edit out sections of the films, and when you miss almost entire conversations because they are laced with too many swear words, but you get the idea pretty easily of what is going on, and without having to actually hear or see what you don’t really want in your home.
I am giving it the Fagan stamp of approval. We’re pretty addicted. We love watching movies together, always have, and this just makes it more affordable and more enjoyable.
Are you going to try out VidAngel? What do you think about filtering movies?
Oh, and if you watch a movie, you should totally print out some cute free DIY popcorn boxes and pop some popcorn!
