2008: The Year My Boyfriend Met My Parents During the FDL Flood

My Mom was on the news! Unfortunately, it wasn’t because she won the lottery or something cool. She actually is one of the people who had to repay FEMA for a flood that happened there 3 years ago.

And here’s the article that was on the FRONT page of the Fond du Lac Reporter (my home town newspaper that I delivered for several years as a newspaper girl).

This incident is specifically important to Josh and I, because we were actually home for this! It of course was the one week that I was home that summer, and I brought my boyfriend (Josh) along to meet the family! So, I’ve decided to not only share the news broadcast of my mom from the home I grew up in, but also videos and photos that I took of the flood and our trip to Fond du Lac, just to reminisce.

It was 3 years ago, June 2008, and Josh and I had been dating for about 3 months at that time, and were so cute and in love:

On this trip home I also got to hang out with my newest niece and nephew:

We thought all the flooding was rather fun, at first… The first night we were there it rained a lot, enough for us to get “Flood 5th Street” (which is fairly common and no cause for too much alarm) and it was fun for us and the nieces and nephews to play in:

Josh and I had fun getting wet in the rain:But, then on Thursday it really flooded:

And here’s our basement. Man there’s a lot of crap down there, well, used to be… These pictures were taken early on. For some reason I was the only one taking photos or videos (and they aren’t the best, I know. It was on my old camera) and I didn’t feel like taking photos when I had 3 feet of water around me and had no idea what was floating around me in the basement.

Seriously, being in the flood was awesome. Of course my parents would disagree as we were later wading through about 3 feet of water in the basement trying to salvage the food storage and other items down there. It was then though that Josh said to me: “Man, your parents better be my in-laws after this,” after he had to reprimand my parents for bickering in the cold water in the basement.I remember walking to my brother’s house, which was literally the next street over, on the sidewalk and having 2 feet of water around my legs. That was a new experience for sure. It was the worst flood that’s come to Fond du Lac in probably a century, and I was there for it! It was crazy seeing a pool where my backyard should be, seeing my driveway filled with water, having water reach the front steps of our porch, and seeing rivers flowing down both sides of my house. I also remember the next day when every shop downtown was closed because they were pumping out their basements. I remember going down to the football stadium and seeing the field under water, as well as the Aquatic center parking lot across the street. People were out and about walking everywhere checking out our town and damages. Seriously, SO cool.
Of course, what has happened now with my parents having to pay back FEMA because they over-rewarded, is garbage. My mother told them upfront that she had insurance, multiple times, but THEY decided to give her assistance anyways. It’s like someone gave you a scholarship and then years later said “Whoops! We gave out too much money in scholarships that year and you didn’t really qualify, so we need that money back.” Why did they award the money in the first place if she didn’t qualify? Three years is a long time to wait to get your money back.

    Wow! That is crazy with all of that flooding. We actually have a lot of fires going on down here and the whole air is filled with smoke! It has all blown in from Arizona. But I loved your cute pictures of you and Josh!
