Looking for mess-free paints for your preschooler? Then keep reading!
Big thanks to my sponsors Crayola Color Wonder and the Mom It Forward Influencer Network for showing me how to do it!
My four-year-old son loves to color and draw and paint, especially when his big sisters color, draw, or paint.
I, on the other hand, don’t always love the mess my son may make when he does so.
He’s not particularly messy, or at least not intentionally. And it’s not like my seven-year-olds are exactly Miss Neat Freaks. They still end up with paint on their clothes or table or floors too.
I love that they all love creating and drawing as that is something I love to do too (though don’t get much time for at the moment). I have a degree in Fine Arts and totally want to foster their creativity, fine motor skills, and artistic prowess. But, I also want to keep their clothes and my furniture free from harm too.
It’s why I’ve generally stuck to washable paints, crayons, and colored pencils, you know, just in case marks end up somewhere other than their papers.
However, I finally tried out one of Crayola’s Color Wonder products which deliver the fun of creative expression without the mess. The Color Wonder products only work on special Color Wonder paper and won’t color on skin, fabric, or furniture.
I specifically tried out their new Color Wonder Magic Light Brush which promises mess-free painting – All Magic. No Mess. Basically, the brush magically lights up to match the chosen color of paint and then shows up that color on your Color Wonder paper.
It’s recommended for kids ages 3+ so I thought I’d give it to my four year old to try out and see if he liked it and would indeed not color on anything else.
I actually didn’t know exactly what to expect when I received the Crayola Color Wonder Light brush. I really didn’t know how it worked.
After I put in some batteries, turned on the color palette, and opened up all the colors, which all look like the same clear wet goo, my son would select a color, gently put the Color Wonder Light Brush over it, and then dip the brush into the clear paint. He then painted on the Color Wonder paper, and a few seconds later, the clear paint would change to the color he had selected.
It really is pretty neat!
To change colors, he simply wiped the paint off on a paper towel, and then selected a new color, dipped in his brush into the clear paint, and painted again. When you are done, just gently wash the brush with some soap and water at the sink, close the paint lids tightly, turn off the color palette and clean up is done!
My older girls wanted to try it out, so I let them give it a whirl too. They really enjoyed it and thought it was pretty cool, and definitely different.
And my two-year-old did as well, but I didn’t think that was such a great idea…. yet.
My biggest complaint about the product is the brush itself. It doesn’t make for neat and tidy paintings, but there are other brush tips you can purchase, which I will likely do so my kids can have a little more creative license with the product. The paintings are also very wet for quite a while afterward.
Overall, Color Wonder helps my kids create and connect with colorful play and art in a way that doesn’t completely stress me out or have me stripping down the kids before they begin doing so they won’t ruin their clothes.
