At the end of July our family moved out of our Midwest home in Indianapolis to our current home in the South, in Central Texas. Moving here has presented us with some new experiences, some new challenges, and a lot of new memories. So, to celebrate NEWvember, I’m sharing the new things we’ve come upon since moving to the Lone Star State. We are thankful we have been able to record a lot of great events (and find directions) easier thanks to unlimited talk, text, and data plans from Walmart Family Mobile. It’s making recording, savings, and sharing all the new events that much easier! The first new experience we had coming into Texas was being homeless of sorts, for three days, and living with complete strangers, from our church, until our apartment contract was ready for us to sign.
Then we had to get used to how these Interstate frontage roads work, and navigating around with the one-ways, construction, and the bad drivers. Just last week I was driving straight toward a car going the wrong way on the one-way frontage road. Seriously, Texas drivers are the worst. But, I do think having a smartphone that can give directions, audibly, while on the go has been so invaluable for us living here and finding our way around. Also, about a third of the vehicles on the road are pick-up trucks. And we’ve seen a lot of cowboy boots and stetson hats, too.
Third, we hear Spanish being spoken just about anytime we go out to the store, and even at church. Everything includes Spanish translations and teleprompts. This definitely wasn’t the case where we lived in Indianapolis, and has definitely been a fun experience for us and our daughters.
Next we had the fun new experience of walking to church as a family, and having a great new ward full of awesome new friends. My husband is also having the new challenge of a being in charge of our church ward’s choir and having to conduct.
It is with these new friends that we had some of the following new experiences:
- Jumped off rocks into Jacob’s Well
- Hiked up Mount Baldy
- Played Pandemic
- Had a RootBeer Tasting Contest
- Made freezer meals
- Shot some awesome new guns (my husband did at least)
- Ran a 10k Race
We have also attended a Texas State University football game, as my husband started his Doctorate program there. I then started homeschooling my daughters for preschool.
And we have seen some crazy big spiders and beetles and bugs in our house, and even a lizard. *Shudder*
Our four year old girls started ballet classes, their first official on-going group exercise/sport class ever. One of my daughters got way more confident in the water since arriving and Texas and both have received their first bikes!
I took pictures of all the ballet students, my first official “photography shoot.” I then later took my first “Gender Reveal” photos for a couple at church, and will hopefully be starting a new little side business taking (inexpensive) pictures for families for the Holidays (and beyond).
And we’ve now experienced our first warm fall. In fact, the colors are maybe just now, two weeks into November, beginning to change colors! Living in a warm climate is a new experience for all of us, one which we have greatly enjoyed, especially this past Monday when I sent my kids outside in their swimsuits to go run in some sprinklers. In November. So, of course I had to document it and share it on Instagram, for all my Northern friends to see. Although, I really do miss those beautiful fall colors I keep seeing pop up on those friend’s Instagram pics and family portraits posted on Facebook!Because, another new thing I did since moving to Texas was set up my first Instagram account (follow me!) on my first smartphone. That’s right: I got my first smartphone ever, through Walmart Family Mobile because they have the lowest priced unlimited plans, after we moved to Texas. Being able to see and share pictures of me and my new friends and all of our experiences together has been a great new adventure.
I recently got a new phone too, the ZTE ZMAX Phablet, that has a huge 5.7″ HD screen, long-lasting battery, plenty of storage, and an 8 Megapixel camera, and it has been awesome! It has definitely helped me capture those Instagram worthy images (even if they lack fall colors so far). Sharing Instagram pictures to my Facebook or Twitter accounts has been a fun way for my family (especially my in-laws who we left back in Indiana) see current pictures of my children, and in a fun, filtered affected, sort of way. It’s also a great way for me to promote my blog too. If you need a new phone, to get all your Instagram kicks, there are rollbacks on two of the WFM phones going on right now: The LGL90 for $119.88 (was $179.88) and the GSIII for $199.88 (was $299.88).But, the smartphone has really helped me look up information on the go, track my outdoors runs, and get directions. Oh, and save money! I love using the Target Cartwheel app, the new Snap App from Groupon, iBotta, Shopmium, and ShopKicks, and the new Walmart Savings Catcher app too! These things are especially helpful as I experience shopping at a brand new grocery store (to me), H-E-B, and have to pay taxes on food again (IN doesn’t have a food tax). My couponing has been almost non-existent lately as I strive to figure out how to shop at non-Kroger stores for food, so the money-savings app on the phones are helping us save a little too. And considering the Walmart Family Mobile is one of the cheapest unlimited plans out there, we really are saving.
I am thankful that we are in Texas right now. It’s been a fun new adventure for us all. And I hope many new adventures will continue here! I mean, we still haven’t even really explored San Antonio or Austin yet! Though, we did go to Cabela’s, you know, the free, dead animal zoo!
So, tell me, what do you love about Texas? Or what are some new things you’ve been experiencing this NEWvember?
