There are just certain smells that bring back memories. The smell of diesel and truck stops never fails to remind me of the road trips I took with my father in his semi truck and the smell he often carried on his hands and clothes. The smell of burgers and fries grilling reminds me of the year I spent working in fast food. Movie theater popcorn reminds me of all the great times and movies I’ve seen, as well as the summer I spent in a popcorn stand. And then there is the smell of lilacs which always brings up memories of spring, glorious spring.
I grew up in Wisconsin and it can get really cold there. The polar vortex this winter that made much of America a frigid nightmare really just brought back memories of growing up in Wisconsin’s harsh winters. But, I didn’t like it then, and I certainly didn’t like it this year in Indiana. So, I, along with most of America, am ecstatic that is now spring and the below freezing weather is gone! Plus, springtime just brings back so many great memories. My mother always got excited when she saw robins again, as she, year after year, reminded us that the robin was the first sign of spring. My parents also had a large lilac bush growing just underneath their bedroom window and every spring one of my favorite things to do was walk past it, climb up into its branches, and clip off some lilac springs and bring them inside. The smell of lilac bushes forever brings back memories of springtime. I hope that I can make springtime memories with my kids, similar to the ones I had growing up.
