On Saturday, September 21, 2013, our family went to the Indiana Hoosier Outdoor Experience at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park. The beautiful thing about this event was that everything was FREE! We have only been to the For Harrison State Park once before because you have to pay to get in, but not for this event! They actually have to park at the large finance center by the park and then get bused into the park, and had ongoing trolleys within the park to take you to different areas. It was perfect for our young kiddos not to have to walk far at all.
We honestly didn’t know what to expect or what this activity was all about. So we checked out some of the various booths and activities we came across. And thankfully the weather was beautiful!
My daughters got to dig in some “dirt,” grind some corn, check out shells, bones, and firs of animals. We got to play some corn hole, an Indiana staple, and check out a teepee! My husband’s favorite part was taking a ride on a Specialized bike. These beauties are usually worth $8500! And he got to go on a quick solo ride on one! We also checked out some live birds and bees! But, the best part of all, and what we saved for the very end, was FREE PONY RIDES! My girls have actually been asking to ride a real horse, so we finally made their wish come true! We did have to stand in line for a while, as there are only five ponies, carrying only five children at a time, and for a five-minute ride. But, it was totally worth it. My daughters loved it. They rode on Honey and Ranger. Lisa’s horse, Honey, shortly after starting, lifted up its tail, stopped and proceeded to pee for a good 30 seconds! We quickly learned where the expression “pee like a race horse” came from! Lisa thought it was hilarious and as she went round and round kept laughing, saying “My horsey peed!” It’s a great thing potty humor is big in our house.
Did you make it out to the Hoosier Outdoor Experience this year?
