I worked really hard after Michael was born (17 Months Ago) to exercise and eat right and because was able to lose all the baby weight. It was awesome! But, then life happened. After we cancelled our YMCA membership in March, I didn’t get like any exercise. And then I started a part-time job, my husband graduated, and then he worked full-time all summer, which meant his health goals of biking hardcore again this summer , and mine of running, were smashed. Combine that with the stress of packing, moving, relocating, and eating out far too often because of the aforementioned things, and I am no longer at my pre-pregnancy weight. I’ve gained about 10 lbs in the last 6 months.
How thankful I am that we now live in a warm climate and have been able to leave some of the stress behind and get our health back on track with some healthy choices. I love our new apartment. It draws my children outside every day. And even in the 100 degree weather it is awesome. With them going out, it encourages me to get out too. Since we’ve moved here we have become an extremely active family! I guess that will happen when you don’t have any responsibilities for a month before school/work starts (for my husband) and you don’t know many people yet.
We have gone swimming in the local river several times. It is a beautiful clear water river flowing through town. And to get from the parking spot to the river has often involved a lot of walking too.
And then we’ll splash and swim in the water for about an hour. We’ve also gone swimming in a neighboring complex’s pool and at a place called Jacob’s Well, where I jumped off some high rocks into the deep hole/well.We bought our daughters bikes and they have been biking almost every day since. Since these are their first bikes, we make sure we are out there with them, and walk up and down our sidewalk alongside them, helping them get started again, cheering them on, and picking them up if they fall. Walking up and down to mailbox and back gives me a good little workout too. Plus, we’ve even gone for a family bike ride. And we even walked to church this past Sunday and plan to make it a regular occurrence. It’s a 15 minute or less walk. I love going for Sunday walks, and if I force, er encourage, my family to walk to church, I get my wish first thing in the morning.
And I like to invite my daughters to walk the little trek to the complex mailboxes with me each day too. Every little bit counts!
Besides family exercise and activities Josh and I have also been upping our game by biking and running again. We happen to live close to a nice paved walking path which I have been running on. And Josh and I have both gone biking up and down the hills around us. Who knew Texas could be so hilly, and Indianapolis so flat?! And since it’s been so long since I have run consistently, I’ve had to review my old post on beginning running tips! And I still hate it.I have made the goal of running (or walking and running) a 10k at the end of next month! Eek! I am more than a little overwhelmed at the idea of running 6 miles in one go. I have never gone more than 3 miles at one time. But, someone is going to do it with me, and they’ll have a free kids run too, which I’m pretty sure my girls will really enjoy.
But, more exercise is only part of our health goals; we want to eat better too. We definitely want to skip the drive-thrus and eat more meals at home. Not only is it smarter financially, but we healthier too. Part of that will come will meal planning. And then we’ll need to make healthy choices with what foods we are eating at home. We have sworn off the sugary sweets again, and don’t have goodies around the home, and are trying much harder to incorporate healthy sides, like fruits and veggies, with our main dinner course. And I really need to stop the late night snacking! I have been staying up late working on the blog and snacking late at night when I start having those hunger pains! And I need to increase my water intake, especially living in hot Texas! And I will try to be keeping up with my oral health too.
The great thing is that I can be rewarded for my healthy goals and healthy choices at Walgreens. I actually signed up for their Balance Rewards for healthy choices program last summer when I was actively running and recording my runs on mapmyrun.com. I found that banking some points for something I was doing anyway was pretty cool, and a great way to save some money on future Walgreens purchases, as every 5,000 points equals a $5 reward. Their app is also great for weight management too. You can get points for doing the following:
- Connect an App/Device for 250 points
- Set Your First Health Goal for 250 points
- Walk/Bike/Run 1 mile for 20 points
- Take Your Blood Pressure for 20 points
- Take a Blood Glucose Test for 20 points
- Weigh daily for 20 points
- Log a Workout daily for 20 points
Last summer I apparently racked up 1450 points for healthy choices and earned several badges. But, last year (unless I was unaware) it wasn’t as easy to input my exercises. Now you can sync up a device or app (FitBit, iHealth, Jawbone, MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal, RunKeeper) so it will automatically update to your account! I love things that save you money without any extra effort!
In order to take full advantage of the Balance Rewards for healthy choices program, I made sure to pick up a new scale from Walgreens. Our previous scale has not been working correctly since our move, giving me two different readings 10 seconds apart, about 5lbs apart. And maybe I just thought the number was much too high, and don’t believe that I’ve actually gained 10lbs in the last few months.So, in order to really track my progress and health goals, a new scale was definitely a must.
I’m looking forward to racking up some major points over the next month as I work on training for a 10k and trying to achieve greater wellness in my life.
